Yalumba!

Yalumba!

When a quartet of bottles from Australian winery Yalumba's Samuel's Collection landed on the table next to a couple of new cookbooks at the editorial office, the decision was quickly made: we are going to combine wine and food. -TEXT MARJOLEIN SCHUMAN | IMAGE YALUMBA | RECIPE MAUREEN TAN | RECIPE PHOTO SVEN BENJAMINS

Yalumba! Australian goodies on the table

Because of this edition's 'island' theme, we received several bottles from Australia. Now the term 'gourmet wine' is rather milked and in fact any wine is meant to be used at the table, preferably the local grape harvest with the local cuisine, but might we say that the smooth wines from Yalumba's Samuel's Collection lend themselves very well to be used with meals? With dishes worldwide, because Australia represents all kinds of international cuisines. A 2020 survey of dining habits found that Thai food is the most popular, surpassing Chinese, Italian and Japanese. We also like the wines from the Samuel's Collection because, unlike many wines in the lower price segment, they have their own identity. Time to sample Australia with four wines.

Modern-style Grenache

Niek: 'I know the Bush Vine Grenache well, I worked with it as a sommelier. The clever thing is that most Grenache has a somewhat earthy, dark vibe, but not this one. They do call Grenache the donut grape: first a lot, then you have emptiness and then a hit after - through the hole in the middle. But so this wine is not made with lots of extraction, lots of structure or lots of darkness: this is a grenache style that is about juiciness, lightness and openness.'
