Riesling ROCKS!

Riesling ROCKS!

What it was like, in Alsace? Just look at one of those walled towns, created in the 8th century around the foundation of the Benedictine abbey. Look at a handful of plastered residential houses with grey and red roofs. As if time has stood still.

A little further away against the green hills are vineyards and farmhouses scattered here and there. For centuries, the population lived mainly from agriculture; winegrowers were in the fields day in, day out. What it's like now? The capital Strasbourg is a modern city home to the European Parliament, on France's border with Germany. Further along the Rhine, you'll find sunny microclimates where winemaking traditions go back generations. But the youngsters use state-of-the-art techniques and organise all kinds of events in the vineyard. Where the sweet style used to dominate, Alsace has been undergoing a real revolution for a while now, and there is a growing response to Crémants, tightly dry Rieslings and serious Pinot Noirs. Tip: Jean Dirler and his wife Ludivine's biodynamic Riesling from the village of Bergholtz.
