Max van Bockel is sadly leaving RIJKS®* in Amsterdam, one of our favourite restaurants. But several new challenges await the sommelier, and so do we. For instance, Max will join the star team of Saam, a new restaurant with South African élan in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel - and he will also be a member of the sommelier team. saam means 'together' in Afrikaans. Saam was created through the collaboration between Koen van der Plas (Inter Scaldes*** and Kasteel Heemstede*) and Margot Janse, celebrated South African chef with Dutch roots.

Drinking for a good cause

When you see the colours blue and yellow, it is immediately clear what it is all about. The label on Purcari's Freedom Blend is dedicated to Ukraine. Château Purcari is a winery in Moldova that has been producing wines since 1827. It launched Freedom Blend in 2014 to commemorate 20 years of independence of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine from the Soviet Union. Now the wine is more topical than ever! Proceeds support the Ukrainian people.

Northern Portugal

Walking through the vineyards along the banks of the Douro. From Porto, walk across Mr Eiffel's steel bridge. Across the river, in Vila Nova de Gaia, visit porthouses and sip the sweet, fortified wine. Northern Portugal is a fantastic travel destination! It was the Romans who introduced viticulture here, but port became known worldwide at the hands of English traders in the second half of the 17th century. The wine landscape looks just as it did then.
