WOMAN OF TASTE: PAULA GONZALÉZ

The harvest in Argentina is in full swing. An exciting time for Paula González, Pyros Wines' new winemaker who has to start proving herself. Fortunately, she is reaping the benefits of her studies in oenology and working with renowned names in the wine world. Indeed, she knows all about the expression of the soil in the grape.

What a lovely photo we received in February from San Juan: Paula González at the Pyros Wines estate. Young as she is, she is certainly no rookie among the vines. She had long been on WINELIFE's wish list to speak to. Great that now, eight years after graduating, she has been included in the Pyros wine team. It is expected that with her arrival, the specific terroir of Pedernal Valley, the country's youngest wine region, will be even better understood. Because if anyone specialises in the interaction between soil and grape, it is her.

Wine reflects the ground
'I want to make wines with the ultimate expression, reflecting Pedernal's vineyards in the best possible way,' she says when her future is discussed. 'The intention is to continue the efforts of the winemaking team over the past few years: I look at each plot in detail and analyse how the different soil types contribute to the wine. I also want to minimise interventions in the winemaking process. This allows the terroir to express itself in the wines we make.'
