Making leather from grape skins and stems is also possible, of course! In 2017, this was a groundbreaking idea that won Italian Rossella Longobardo first prize in an innovation competition. She bagged a cash prize of €300,000 to start production on an industrial scale. The idea has since been adopted in the fashion world. After all, why use animals when you can make textiles and leather from cow dung, pineapple peels, mushrooms, cacti, apples and leaves? At RTL Boulevard, we heard Pim Driessen of Mercer Amsterdam talk about their vegan trainers. They are made of textiles that incorporate 85 per cent grapes. That wine leather is soft, supple, stable, durable and also recyclable. The shoe also contains plastic bottles and algae for the sole.

Guild glass

We now make glasses for grape varieties and wine styles (see page 15), but special occasions used to be the reason to make a special glass. Like the rare 18th-century gunner's glass that the Amsterdam Museum received on loan from the Royal Dutch Antiquarian Society (KOG). It is a mens glass from the Amsterdam militia of Wijk 5. A mens glass is a ceremonial drinking glass; a marksmen's guild is a club of citizens with weapons to protect the city.
