Winter by the sea

Being sentenced to probation. It's less punishment than jail, but you still have to keep quiet, listen nicely, don't make mistakes... We don't bother and sit it out patiently. - TEXT + IMAGE EDITORS

Reception

In Scheveningen, they are just as hospitable in winter as in summer, so we walk from the harbour to the beach in a fresh breeze. We have applauded Restaurant Waterproef on the marina before, but we now congratulate host Yves van Westreenen on winning spot 87 in the Nice Top 100 of 2022! We have drinks at Gastrovino La Liguria and dinner at one of the few beach bars that stay open all year: Hart Beach.

Theory

The passion for good food and drink jumps off when we enter Gastrovino. Housed in the old Sluiswachtershuis, but you feel like you're in Italy. With a wine bar where you can tap your own wines, a restaurant with a lovely terrace and a mercato where you can buy the Italian crockery used yourself. You can also buy everything you eat here from the shop.

Taste

The kitchen uses a lot of certified slow-food products from Italy. We'll taste that later, as we go for a aperitivo. You can take a sip, half or whole glass of wine with a tap card of your choice but we let the sommelier serve us and tell us great stories. A glass of Chardonnay (half €3.25 whole €6.50) from Antinori's vineyards in... Chile. Whoever says wine in Italy says Antinori, but the famous, old Italian wine family now also produces overseas.
