Sleeping among the vineyards in South Tyrol

The jagged rocks of the Dolomites contrast starkly with the green Alpine meadows. Nameplates are there in Italian and German. Fresh wines brim with flavour in the glasses and plates of both pasta and speck are served. In South Tyrol, Austria and Italy come together in a quirky region. WINELIFE selected culinary to do's - from starred restaurants to game picking. Which are worthwhile. - TEXT KATJA BROKKE | IMAGE PEXELS.COM

Sleeping among the vineyards in South Tyrol

This family-run hotel - from the Pichlers - is located on the flanks of Bressanone. Half an hour's drive from Abbazia di Novacella. Among the vineyards, a striking building stands out modernly against the traditional buildings all around. It is a recently annexed wing of Haller Suites. A hotel that once began in such a traditional building. From grandpa and grandma Pichler. The grandchildren are now at the helm, creating a nice combination of traditional and modern.

The rooms in the modern part all overlook the vineyards and Bressanone, traditionally an important episcopal town. Which is reflected in the many churches and monasteries. The minibar contains bottles of own-labelled wine. The hotel produces some 6,000 bottles a year for its own consumption. The grapes come from its own vineyards and the neighbour then turns them into a fine wine. This is where you really unwind. Not only because of the wine, but also because of the views of the town and the Dolomites. The food served at the accompanying Restaurant AO is prepared with attention and local ingredients. Think deep-fried pumpkin flowers stuffed with goat cheese, aubergine, mushrooms (picked by the chef). And kale or char with buttermilk sauce, red berries, clover and millet. Highly recommended!
