Going for Greek wine

A Mediterranean climate with cooling island winds, volcanic soils, indigenous grape varieties, a new generation of winemakers with a preference for modern styles: name the ingredients of a good wine country and Greece has them. The wines are attracting more and more attention in the Netherlands. We recently tasted some nice surprises at restaurant Elea (see WINELIFE 83).

Why has it taken so long to find out what Greece has to offer? We asked Martin van der Heiden of Greek Wines, which imports from the country's various wine regions and supplies the hospitality, retail and private sectors. He also organises wine tours. Martin: 'In the 1970s, the Greek feeling was 'sold' in the Netherlands and to the Dutch wine trade in the form of retsina, semi-sweet imiglykos, sweet Samos and some ouzo. This unfortunately created the wrong image of Greece and its wines.'
