Sugar cane beverage

Sugar cane beverage

Fruit, grain, potatoes, plants: anything with sugar in it can be fermented or distilled and turned into a flavourful drink with alcohol. Rum is made from sugar cane. The sweet flavours in rum do not come from the plant, just as the aromas in wine do not come directly from the grapes, but are created by the fermentation or ageing of the wine, from a variety of chemical compounds. The type of wood the rum is aged in, for example old oak sherry barrels, or in the case of Flor de Caña old bourbon barrels, can impart sweet notes to the rum, such as brown sugar, fudge, caramel, dried fruit, honey and vanilla.

Flor de Caña is a soft, mature rum made on a family estate managed by the fifth generation in Nicaragua, at 900 metres altitude at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano. Because of its tropical climate, Nicaragua is ideally suited for growing sugar cane. Sustainably produced from field to bottle, the rum is the world's only CO₂-neutral and Fair Trade-certified alcohol.
