Pocket-sized cosmopolitan

Pocket-sized cosmopolitan

How many times would we have whizzed past it on our way to the French south? Very often. And more and more often the feeling crept up on me that I was unfairly missing something. So this time we didn't drive through and stopped in Luxembourg on our way home to discover the city in 48 hours. That was way too short!

First a bofferding

We - daughter Roos, her boyfriend Jorrim and I - had booked rooms on the edge of Luxembourg Stadt's city centre. Hotel Parc Belle-Vue on Avenue Marie-Thérèse is certainly not the most inspiring place to stay, but it is perfectly situated between two of the many city parks, has a car park and sublime beds. But we were nowhere near that. After a quick shower, we dove straight into the city and looked around with wonder. The mix of centuries-old ramparts, stately buildings, modern high-rise buildings, wide avenues and narrow cobbled alleyways is immediately striking. Remarkable is the relative quiet in what could surely be called a pocket-sized cosmopolitan. Free public transport keeps most cars out of the city centre. The first stop was gastropub Ënnert de Steiler, at the intersection of Rue de la Loge, Grand-Rue and Rue Wiltheim, because there was just a spot in the sun there, the furniture could be freely shifted around to stay in that sunshine and large glasses of blond beer were being tapped. Bofferding of course, a thirst-quenching delicious Luxembourgish beer. Next door to this gastropub sits Dipso - The Wine Republic, one of the city's many wine bars.
