Domaine de malavieille 'Roc & Lune' Saint-Saturnin 2019

For Carignan, the older the vine, the more profound the wine. With over 100-year-old vines, we give a grand insight into the magic of Carignan.

Domaine de Malavieille

Whether we would like to say hello to the Germain family in Meursault. Eric Supply, winemaker of Domaine de Malavieille, warmly waves us goodbye after our first visit in 2008. For ten years he worked in Meursault with Jean-Marc Roulot in the cellar and vineyard. According to him, Germain is one of the very best farmers in the village. We have an instant edge when we tell him we have been a family member there for 20 years. The Malavieille winery is a typical southern French estate, set on basaltic terrain called Les Terrasses du Larzac. It has championed the Agriculture Biologique AB and Demeter labels for biodynamic farming since 2000, producing wines with character that are in harmony with the farming of the living. In 2003, certification for the AB logo was obtained by the Véritas Institute. In 2005, the Demeter International certification was also obtained and mentioned on the label of Domaine Malavieille's wines. Also in the Languedoc, Eric did not school with the least of these: Olivier Jullien and Prieuré de Saint Jean de Bébian. A pure artisan, then, who now gets to vinify the fruits of Mireille Bertrand's biodynamically tended garden. This brave lady puts her whole heart and soul into making the time-honoured De Malavieille family estate, not far from Lac du Salagou, flourish.

Roc et Lune is a velvety wine to swoon away at. And yet it also has spice, thanks to the accent of black olive on the palate. Provençal spices swirl around to the rhythm of plum and blackberry fruit. The uplifting tang of cocoa in the aftertaste means you will never fall asleep with this charmer.

Flavour description

The scent is like a veil of velvet. Cherry red in colour, laced with plums and Provençal spices. It is both charming and quirky. The taste is at least as velvety as the scent suggests, with a lively soft filling. Blackberry and plum fruit together with the darkness of black olives. The fine cocoa note in the aftertaste breaks the warm glow and clears the palate. It is a wine with a rich presence without being loaded.

Application

Pour the wine preferably in a large Bordeaux-type glass. Above all, don't pour it too hot, 15/16°C is fine, this way the wine remains springy and energetic. No need to decant or open in advance, just let the wine blossom in the glass. Don't have a moment in sight yet when you want to drink this one. No problem, it can feel free to continue aging in the cellar for another year.

Wine and food

It is a wine for many moments. It is a perfect companion to a classic dish like Confit de Canard. But also arranges itself with ease to a dish of stir-fried beef with black beans in oyster sauce. And if you don't feel like cooking, break off some chunks of dark chocolate and drink the wine as a delicious 'after dinner' glass.
