Being sentenced to probation. It's less punishment than jail, but you still have to keep quiet, listen nicely, don't make mistakes... We don't bother and sit it out patiently.

Dinner at the Pont d'Avignon

The service and food are not very special, even aloofly French, but the place is brilliant. Restaurant Le Bercail is in the papal city of Avignon on an island in the Rhone overlooking the Pont Saint-Bénézet. Only a fraction remains of this historic arched bridge, but it is famous for the children's song Sur le Pont d'Avignon, in which there is a lap dance above the water - and we certainly did.

Whether we want to order wine. Is the pope Catholic? We naturally choose Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France's first AOC wine. The vines in this appellation are on the hills and banks of the Rhône, in the Rhone Valley (Côtes du Rhône) between Avignon and Orange. Its name dates back to the 14th century, when the pope stayed in ballinage in Avignon instead of Rome.
