Hervé and Diane Fabre: back on malbec's native soil

This time, the People with Taste are a married couple: Hervé and Diane Fabre. Two years ago, these winemakers also featured as Couple with Taste with their Argentinean wine brand Phebus, but back then their plans in France were still in their infancy. This has since changed.

Hervé and Diane Fabre: back on malbec's native soil

In France's premier malbec region - Cahors - Hervé and Diane have now managed to acquire a beautiful château. Hervé Fabre, or Mr Malbec, incidentally, was already named best red winemaker in the world by the International Wine Challenge in 2018, as Fabre became known for his monocepage malbecs from Mendoza, Uco Valley and Patagonia. His wife Diane is not blank in their wine business; she is a wine geek. She is involved in everything from wine production to marketing. She is also half German/half French. Which Hervé says is very useful: "My husband always says: 'Be German at work and French at home.'

Love of malbec

So this article is about the Fabres and their wines in Cahors. Cahors in France is the birthplace of malbec, wines of 100 per cent malbec come from Cahors. In other regions like Bordeaux, malbec is part of a blend. And it is precisely this grape that made Hervé and Diane Fabre decide to return to France. 'It's the love of malbec,' Diane and Hervé drop in when asked why they went back to France. At the time, their move to Argentina was also something special. Going back to that moment, Hervé and Diane's story is, in fact, special. Hervé was 25 years ago négociant, or wine merchant in Bordeaux, and he wanted to become a winemaker again. 'That profession was in the family, it was instilled with the mother tongue.'
