Bordeaux and primeur: a patchwork quilt

What is the 2017 vintage worth? Over the past few months, the primeur wines have come out and the press and wine trade have pondered this question. This always starts in April with the mega-busy 'En Primeur Week' in Bordeaux: châteaux open their cellar doors to let wine connoisseurs taste the 2017 vintage for the first time while it is still in the barrel. The weather is always the biggest factor of concern and this year there was a lot of drought, but then, on the contrary, wetness during the harvest period. But it was mainly the severe frost in April that affected many of the vineyards, especially the colder, lower-lying terroirs; 40 per cent of production was lost. This was the main talking point among tasters and is seen as the biggest influence on prices.
