African wine sisters: Wine Power Woman

African wine sisters: Wine Power Woman

A little wine lover knows what wonderful wines South Africa produces. But do you also know that an increasing number of wines come from female winemakers? -TEXT MARJOLEIN SCHUMAN | PHOTOS CHAMBONÉ WINE STYLE

They are called South Africa's 'Wine Power Women': female winemakers in the Western Cape. Register wine expert Angélique Chamboné got to know them while working there. Angélique has been giving master classes on South African wines and organising tastings for years. While working in the wineries at a number of renowned winemakers in South Africa - as a 'cellar rat' as she says herself - she noticed that she had entered a male-dominated world.

When she met some good women winemakers, she asked why the international public did not yet know them. They indicated that this was precisely what they were up against; name recognition is less easy for women to obtain, they have to prove themselves more. What also comes into play is a less commercial approach than many a male winemaker. Reason for Angélique to introduce these women as her 'African Wine Sisters' in the Netherlands. Through tastings and promotional activities, she puts the winemakers in the spotlight. She now knows quite a few of them personally and has worked with them in the cellars as their 'Dutch Wine Sister'.
