The Netherlands' first paper wine bottle - on sale at Marqt

The world's most sustainable wine bottle has been on the shelves since this week. This paper bottle is 5x lighter, and its ecological footprint is 6x smaller than that of a glass bottle! Moreover, the production and transport of glass releases more CO2 than the production process of this paper variant. Win-win (chin-chin!).

The exterior is made of 94% recycled cardboard, which means it weighs 5x less than a glass bottle. You notice it as soon as you take the bottle off the shelf: it is much lighter. Imagine the difference that makes when you transport (and dispose of) a cargo load full of it!

Closing the loop

And speaking of disposal: the cardboard outside simply goes with the paper, the plastic inside with PMD - child's play. And what's even better: both the cardboard and the plastic ís already recycled. Round story, right?

Nico Bart - wine buyer at Marqt: 'Marqt is a big fan of innovative solutions that make the food chain more sustainable. We are therefore proud to to be able to offer one of our favourite wines in this sustainable bottle. The bottle an sich weighs only 83 grams, dyou notice when you take the bottle from the shelf.'

Heavy wine, light bottle

That the exterior is spectacular should be obvious by now, but we are at least as excited about the content.

Although the bottle is very light, the wine itself is quite heavy. A wonderfully firm Italian red wine, made from hand-picked grapes. A blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Melot grapes, which have been left on the skins for a long time, allowing for plenty of extraction of colour and tannins. With a short ageing in French oak, you can taste soft wood aromas without them overpowering the wine. Aromas of red and black fruit are also present with a hint of chocolate and a little vanilla.

The paper bottle costs 9.99 and is available in all Marqt shops.

The wine department at Marqt

Marqt has an extensive wine section in all its shops. The wines come from farmers who ensure that the earth is not burdened unnecessarily and remains fertile for the next generation. In the search for the best wine, the focus is on the terroir, the grape and a good price-quality ratio. So you always pay for the wine in the bottle and not for the name on the label.
