Once, twice

Once, twice

Auction house Christie's has a Wine & Spirits Department, which organises both live and online auctions in London and Hong Kong.

It was allowed to sell one of the largest wine collections ever offered at auction last November: the cellar of Dutch radiologist doctor Allard Botenga went under the hammer. For 60 years, the wine expert collected, among other things, Premier Cru's from all the famous châteaux in Bordeaux from the best vintage years going back to 1914. With the other wine countries included, all the bottles were split between the two locations: the live auction in Hong Kong brought €5 million and the subsequent live auction in London just over €2 million. A new generation of collectors is hopefully enjoying it. Wine collecting requires not only money, but also discipline and knowledge. It is not nothing to spend decades of very disciplined time buying the right wines and storing them neatly. Dr Botenga called it a special adventure.
