Haute couture wines Laurent Ponsot now also available in the Netherlands

Winemaker Laurent Ponsot gained global fame after he unmasked wine fraudster Rudy Kurniawan in the documentary Sour Grapes. But among true Burgundy lovers, Laurent Ponsot was praised for his top-quality wines long before his Netflix debut. In 2017, Laurent decided to leave the family business Domaine Ponsot to pursue a new path with his son Clément. Under the new Laurent Ponsot label, they carry a wide range of bourgognes, from 'simple' Bourgogne rouge to Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru. Laurent Ponsot's wines have recently become available in the Netherlands at Best of Wines.

Haute couture wines

As we have come to expect from Laurent Ponsot, his wines are all about terroir expression. Thereby, according to Laurent, every detail within the process is important, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. He himself speaks of "haute couture wines". The grapes are grown as naturally as possible, without the use of chemicals. Ponsot avoids adding sulphite but instead uses a neutral gas during barrel élevage.

From Bourgogne tout court to grand cru

With his departure, Laurent Ponsot has taken over some of Domaine Ponsot's own parcels and also buys fruit for his wines from as many as 26 different Burgundy appellations as a négociant. Although this list includes quite a few grands crus, including Chambertin, Montrachet, Échezeaux and Bonnes Mares, Ponsot's renewed focus is not just on the big names. Ponsot: "I want to make wines that everyone can enjoy and that are accessible to everyone." That means Ponsot releases both grands and premiers crus, but also village wines like Meursault or Gevrey-Chambertin as well as generic burgundies (both blanc and rouge).

A modern jacket

The Laurent Ponsot wines have an atypical look, especially for Burgundy. The bottles have a futuristic-looking label, in metallic silver and light green colours with a synthetic closure instead of a cork. To prevent adulteration, the bottles are equipped with microchips and, through built-in sensors in the case, the temperature of the wine can be read for up to 15 years. The buyer can thus be sure that the wine has been transported and stored at the right temperature.
