What does wine from a teacup taste like?

Bad of course... at least, in our opinion. The choice of wine glass is as personal as the wine itself. Some drink their wine out of a Duralex Picardie glass, while others only go for ultra-thin and fragile glassware that almost breaks when you look at it. What's on your table?

What does wine from a teacup taste like?

What could be finer than putting your lips to gossamer sparkling crystal? It makes the wine taste instantly better. Whether this is really true, we ask the experts: Barbara Verbeek, wine journalist and wine glass designer, and Fonger Kranenburg of Wijnkoperij de Gouden Ton. Both feel that wine comes out better when it comes out of the right glass. But there is quite a lot on sale in that area. What do you choose?

WINE FROM A LEMONADE GLASS

Barbara Verbeek: 'It started for us in 2009, as a counter-reaction to the mass drinking of wine from lemonade glasses on the beach or at the campsite. Although this is often not the most complex wine, I still think it's a waste. For our bar, we experimented with different shapes of glassware, and it was abundantly clear that the shape of the glass gives a huge difference in the taste of the wine. Only in the right glass do you taste the true potential of the wine. This is why I now give glass tasting sessions. The course participants are given several wine glasses next to each other, in which the exact same wine goes. It's great to see that everyone tastes the difference between the wines from the different glasses.' Barbara went one step further. In collaboration with Royal Leerdam, she designed The Experts Collection.

ROYAL LEERDAM BY BARBARA

The Experts Collection is a series of wine glasses for different types of wine. 'It had to be five, because there are so many different types of wine. The right wine glass brings out the bouquet and flavour of a wine in the best possible way. Barbara says: 'The days of two types of wine glasses - one for red, one for white wine - are behind us. An easy, fruity wine in a big glass is like tights that sag off your bottom. The elasticity is gone. That type of wine comes out much better in a smaller glass.'
