2020 Cantine Cellaro 'Luma' Grillo, Sicily

Cantina Cellaro is located 65 kilometres southwest of Palermo in Sicily, in Sambuca di Sicilia. This village lies in the heart of the province of Agrigento. An insane view! At 600 metres above sea level, vineyard after vineyard stretches out. Very characteristic of this region are the beautiful mountains surrounding Lake Arancio.

This winery has been making wines for centuries. The winery's real growth came after a strategic agreement between Cantine Cellaro and Farnese Vini. The collaboration was immediately rigorous: all wines were revised. Both the production method and the branding were reinvented, to make the wines more in keeping with the authentic winemaking methods used here. The label now features the snail (Luma) that lives in the vineyards. This snail is proof of the winery's clean and natural agriculture.

With the expansion of the winery, the number, and area, of vineyards also increased. Cantine Cellaro's partners began by mapping and classifying the area. This allowed them to see which areas were most suitable for specific grape varieties. Cantine Cellaro now includes some 1,000 winemakers with around 1,700 hectares of vineyard.

'Lumà', the shortened Italian name for snail...as well as the nickname for the inhabitants of Sambuca di Sicilia. Where the beautiful vineyards of Cantine Cellaro are located, on top of Sicily!

Flavour description

Grillo is a grape that can be both expressive and subdued. In addition to its own fruity expression, it is capable of countering its surroundings well. So does this luma. The aroma shows peach and pear fruit, but is fruity and salty at the same time. The scent alone, has an invigorating effect on the drinker. The wine gives a pleasant mouth filling and has a salmiac tingle. It is pleasantly airy at the onset. The juicy thirst-quenching comes further into the wine. Which ensures that it never comes across as aggressive yet remains digestible. The wine is also not overly perfumed on the palate, which ensures that you continue to enjoy drinking it without becoming satiated by it too quickly.

Application

A no nonsense wine. Ready to drink straight from the fridge. You don't need decanters or crazy glasses for it. In fact, no preparation is needed at all apart from putting the bottle cold. Just don't let it get too hot in the sun, it will lose its spontaneity.

Wine and food

A wine for sunlight. With a drinks board in the garden, it is perfectly at home. But also with a Caesar salad or a fresh starter. Shellfish dishes in particular are right up his street. And a slightly spicier dish he also knows how to master. A wine for the cheeseboard it is not, perhaps only with the fresher goat cheeses it could get along.
