2020 Bodegas Salentein, Barrel Selection Pinot Noir, Mendoza

The wine is made under the direction of Bodegas Salentein, the highly prestigious wine project of Dutchman M. Pon started in 1997. Trendsetter in Argentine wine and eminently good for top quality wine. Salentein's Barrel Selection is characterised by maturation in oak barrels. Ageing in wooden barrels gives the wine more structure and flavour on the one hand, but also makes it lose its sharp edges.

The Barrel Selection vineyards are located in the heart of Alto Valle de Uco, at more than 1,200 metres above sea level. Here, the Pinot Noir grape grows on coarse rock, this provides perfect drainage and forces the plant's roots to take deep root in a quest for nutrients for this delicious Barrel Selection. Winemaker José Galante handles this delicate Pinot Noir in style. Before fermentation and before the grapes are crushed, a six-day cold soaking takes place. During this period, additional colour and flavour aromas are released to the juice without extraction of tannins and bitter substances. This Barrel Selection matures for 10 months in French oak after its fermentation.

Flavour description

The aroma of this charming Pinot noir gives notes of soft cherries, berries and roses. The fine spiciness and sultry framing reflects well the ageing in wooden barrels. It shows the attentive upbringing and desire to present a wine of charm. On the palate, the wine gives a surprisingly generous flavour with rounded ripe tones. The wine has fresh acidity and orange bitterness provides an uplifting finish. The tannins of release from the wood aging becomes apparent in the aftertaste. It adds a touch of liquorice to the aftertaste.

Application

A wine great for serving lightly chilled. Serve it in a large Burgundy glass to release all the perfume and allow the tannins to melt further into the wine. It is a wine that can be enjoyed right now, but can also feel free to continue aging in the cellar for another year. Bear in mind that the wine will then become richer and lose some of its spontaneity.

Wine and food

It is a wine that can be enjoyed all year round. In spring with a lamb chop. In summer with the barbecue or with a vitella tonato at lunch. Obviously also wonderful with lobster type dishes and fish dishes. But also think of a red curry or a Blanquet de Veau.
