Why World Verdejo Day?

Already at least 1,000 years ago, south of Valladolid in Spain, white wine was made from the verdejo grape. Back then, these were not the fresh Verdejos you know today. The wines were very heavy and sherry-like, which was the trend then. In the 1970s, new life was breathed into this wine with a vengeance. You can still taste that today and it should be celebrated! That is why World Verdejo Day created, and we enjoy this every second Friday in June. vinous day.

Flagship Verdejo

A wine so popular that it deserves its own day, then you have to be of good (wine) stock. Characteristic of Rueda Verdejo is its powerful aroma, a touch of green pepper, an intense and dry taste, fresh and a surprisingly firm bite. Verdejo is known as a terrace wine, but you can drink it all year round.

The name Verdejo comes from the Spanish word for green, verde. Pretty logical, as Rueda Verdejo is generally a light greenish yellow in the glass. These unique grapes are grown in eight different regions of Spain. Nonetheless, we can pre-empt that Rueda is the leading producer, accounting for about 61 per cent of the total number of Verdejo wines. Moreover, the D.O. - the umbrella organisation - keeps a close eye on quality.

The region is home to numerous vineyards with gravelly and sandy soils and vines more than 100 years old. There are currently more than 70 wine producers in Rueda making Verdejo wines. A showpiece to be proud of!

So, reason enough to open that bottle, but check if it's a Rueda Verdejo... 😉
