Ribera Del Duero the hidden wine gem of Spain

Ribera Del Duero the hidden wine gem of Spain

Below the well-known wine region of Rioja, on the Duero River, lies Ribera Del Duero. This region is known for its extreme climate, which produces quirky and powerful wines, mainly made from the stiff tempranillo grape. WINELIFE visited a number of wineries and had a drink with them. Text Katja Brokke | Image José Ignacio Berdón

If you want to visit Ribera del Duero, a flight to Madrid is followed by a two-hour car journey through a rolling landscape, which sometimes seems unearthly because of the sparse and low vegetation and strange rock formations. There are cows here and there along the road, abandoned petrol stations and motels flash by gloomily. It could easily be in an American western. The villages on the way to provincial capital Valladolid seem deserted, although the roads are well maintained. The more you drive north-west, the more castles appear, the more the area opens up. Although, of course, everything is closed on Sundays - even the hotel bar in Valladolid.
