CHESSBOARD LANDSCAPE

Another piece of Unesco wine landscape has been added. Since this summer, the northern Italian Prosecco hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene have been added to the Cultural Landscape category of Unesco's World Heritage List. And the sparkling Italians can be quite proud of that, as they share this almost sacred status with, among others, their effervescent big brother Champagne and the wine regions Alto Douro, Tokaj, Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. The originally rugged terrain between Venice and the Dolomites with its green ciglinoni (vineyard terraces with grass instead of stones) and typical, steep hogback hills has been shaped and adapted by man for centuries.
