Twin grapes

Twin grapes

How can one grape be wildly popular and the other virtually unknown, when they are enormously similar? Take chardonnay and antão vaz. Indeed, the former is world-famous and French, the latter unknown and Portuguese.

Yet both are powerful and expressive, with full, round and creamy flavours. Both grape varieties benefit from wood aging for structure and complexity. The only difference is that chardonnay is planted all over the world and antão vaz is only found in Portugal's Alentejo.

We discovered this great unknown at the Portuguese wine event From Wine to Soul, a pleasant surprise. Our recommendations: the variations with antão vaz by Marcolino Sebo, especially the Quinta da Pinheira- Antão Vaz Superior. So if you are chardonnay-weary, this is definitely recommended.
