The fresh side of Austria

The fresh side of Austria

Always look on the bright side of life. The same goes for red wines. Intense, dark-coloured versions with hefty amounts of alcohol are no longer the trend: refreshing, light wines it should be, which we prefer to drink chilled too. Good news for Austrian winemakers.

In the nineties and noughties, solid reds at room temperature might have been the way to feel like drinking wine, especially in winter by the fireplace. But now we actually get a boost from lively, more delicate wines in which you can also taste the grape varieties well. And let vintners of Austria excel precisely in light and fresh reds. Their own grape varieties like zweigelt, blaufränkisch and sankt laurent also lend themselves well to it. Feel free to keep them in the fridge for a bit longer. Besides, room temperature has long been too warm for wines; after all, our houses used to be colder.
