Lighter enjoyment: the rise of lower-alcohol wine and how Lawson's Dry Hills is capitalising on it.

More conscious and healthy living, greater balance and a focus on well-being: these are themes that are increasingly reflected in how we eat, drink and enjoy ourselves. Wine lovers are also embracing this shift in consciousness. Not by parting with taste or quality, but by making conscious choices. Lower-alcohol wines have thus long since ceased to be a niche, but have become a serious and rising trend within the wine world.

A response to changing lifestyles

The growing popularity of lower-alcohol wines fits seamlessly with broader lifestyle trends. It is not necessarily enjoyed less, but enjoyed more consciously. Moments are becoming more attuned to daily life. For instance, more and more consumers opt for no- or lower-alcohol, or consciously limit themselves to one glass of wine with dinner. People are drinking less, but more consciously, with taste being central.

Younger generations in particular are leading the way in this regard. Recent studies show that, on average, Gen Z and Millennials drink less alcohol than older generations. The phenomenon of zebra striping is also gaining ground: in this, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are alternated during an occasion. This underlines that mindful drinking is not hype, but a structural behavioural change.

Wine producers are responding to this changing need by expanding their range to include lower-alcohol and non-alcoholic wines, while maintaining flavour, style and quality.

Belinda Jackson, Marketing & Sales Manager at Lawson's Dry Hills, also clearly recognises this movement:
“We find that wine lovers are increasingly conscious of their health and well-being. They want to continue to enjoy quality and taste, but at times prefer less alcohol.”

Lighter in alcohol, full of flavour

Lawson's Dry Hills responds to exactly that need with the introduction of the ‘lighter in alcohol’ Sauvignon Blanc 2025 (9%). The New Zealand producer, known for its sustainable practices and iconic Marlborough style, is launching a Sauvignon Blanc with this wine that shows that less alcohol and a full-bodied flavour can go perfectly well together.

The character is unmistakably Marlborough: aromatic, fresh and expressive. Think scents of passion fruit, green herbs and citrus, followed by a lively palette with tropical fruit, apple and fresh, crisp acidity.

Winemaker Marcus Wright stresses the importance of balance:
“This aromatic, flavoursome wine has all the classic characteristics of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but with 30% less alcohol than our 2025 Estate Sauvignon Blanc. The residual sugar and acidity are perfectly balanced, resulting in a wonderfully dry and fresh wine, ideal for lighter moments.”

Sustainable from vineyard to glass

Like all wines from Lawson's Dry Hills, the ‘lighter in alcohol’ Sauvignon Blanc is carefully produced from grape to glass. The grapes are grown with respect for nature, using sustainable and eco-friendly growing methods that ensure healthy vineyards and rich expression of the soil. The ‘lighter in alcohol’ wine is also fully in line with Lawson's Dry Hills' ambitious sustainability vision.

As New Zealand's most sustainably certified wine producer, Lawson's Dry Hills is at the forefront of corporate responsibility. With ISO 14064 carbon zero certification, ISO 14001 certification for environmental management systems and Certified B Corp status, the wine producer shows that sustainability is deeply embedded in its operations.

The result is a contemporary Sauvignon Blanc that is both familiar and innovative, with an eye for people, the environment and taste. The ‘lighter in alcohol’ Sauvignon Blanc 2025 from Lawson's Dry Hills is ideal for wine lovers who want to be more conscious, are looking for a lower alcohol and calorie alternative and love the classic, fresh Marlborough style.
