Shepherd's pie

Shepherd's pie

Preparation 1 hour and 30 minutes

What you need (4 people)

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 carrot, in very small cubes
  • 2-3 stalks of celery, in very small cubes
  • 300 g minced beef
  • 400 g peeled tomatoes (1 can), chopped
  • 2 tsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 150 ml beef stock
  • 2 tsp thyme
  • few drops of tabasco, to taste
  • small handful of parsley leaves, coarsely chopped
  • 1 kg potatoes, peeled and cut into equal pieces
  • dash of milk
  • 50 g butter, plus extra
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • handful of breadcrumbs or breadcrumbs

This is how you make it

Heat the butter in a heavy pan over medium-high heat and fry the onion, garlic, carrot and celery in it for about 10 minutes until soft. Add the minced meat, fry until nice and loose with a fork.
Add tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaf, stock and thyme and bring everything to the boil. Turn down the heat and simmer for at least 20 minutes until the sauce has thickened nicely.
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain them, let them evaporate and mash them. Add a dash of milk and a generous knob of butter and blend to a smooth puree. Season with nutmeg, salt and pepper.
Season the mince sauce with a few drops of Tabasco, salt and pepper. Spoon in the parsley. Pour the sauce into a baking dish and cover with the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle lightly with some breadcrumbs and spread small lumps of cream butter on top. Bake the shepherd's pie in the oven for about 30 minutes until it simmers nicely and the mashed potatoes turn a nice golden brown. Serve with homemade apple sauce.
