Retreat among the vines

Retreat among the vines

After a number of hobby vineyards for WINELIFE readers to escape to, this estate is similarly charming and quiet, so perfect for seclusion. But here, no less than 24 hectares are planted with vines. Directly from the residence, you can mindfully stroll among them, but they also require tending! - TEXT + IMAGE EDITORS

WHERE: LANSAC, BORDEAUX

HOW MUCH: €1,908,000 EXCLUDING STOCK

From the 18th century

This vineyard in the world-famous Bordeaux wine region surrounds a small castle with 18th-century cellars. It looks old, but nice and sturdy, with a central tower in the facade as you enter through the entrance roundabout. The chateau flourished in the 19th century, spurred on by a merchant from Bordeaux. The cru was acquired in 1900 by a vintner from Lansac, the great-grandfather of the current winemaker who took over the reins in 1991.

What is the house wine?

The nearly 24-hectare vineyard falls under the appellation Côtes de Bourg. The terroir is clay and gravel with also silt soils from the rivers that flow here. The vineyard is very well maintained and HVE3-certified, which stands for a sustainable farming system. For example, no herbicide has been used since 2018. The density of plantings is 4,545 vines per hectare. About 4 hectares, incidentally, are planted with somewhat fewer but very old vines, from which a fine Gran Reserve is made. The grape varieties are merlot (68 per cent), cabernet sauvignon (19 per cent) and malbec (13 per cent): perfect varieties for powerful red Bordeaux blends. There is a chateau brand name that we won't reveal, but it comes out well in wine taster reviews.
