The regions of Austria: Styria
The world is rich in wine-growing regions that produce heavier wines than Styria, but this region manages to express the typicality of origin in a fresh and elegant way. Due to climatic differences and diverse soil types, Styria divided into three wine-growing regions, which have had official DAC status since the 2018 vintage (Districtus Austriae Controllatus): Vulkanland Steiermark DAC, Südsteiermark DAC and Weststeiermark DAC.
Spicy rosé
In the hilly landscape of Weststeiermark, Schilcher reigns supreme: a spicy rosé that is a unique terroir wine in the world. In the Sausal hills and on the Southern Styrian Wine Route, Sauvignon Blanc and Muskateller predominate, while in Styrian Vulkanland, Traminer takes its place alongside the other two varieties as a jewel for wine connoisseurs. An extinct volcanic field with a soil of basalt and tuff gives mineral aromas and beautiful acidity to the wines here. You will also find many traditional wine taverns, Buschenschänke, where you can taste culinary delights alongside the regional wines.
What other grapes are growing?
However, the most widely planted grape variety in Styria is welschriesling, which stuns a large fan base with its aroma of green apples. Those who like full-bodied wines can turn to the pinot family.
