MIP and more!

The motto of Guillaume and Virginie Philip of Domain des Diables for 2021 is: 'Fear less, enjoy more' with the brand-new rosés from 2020, the latter will certainly succeed! Guillaume previously sent us his personal tasting notes, but now we can taste for ourselves how delicious the 2020 rosés are again. So delicious that the moment the wines arrive at Kwast Wijnkopers, they fly out of the warehouse with the same speed, on their way to customers. -TEXT SUZANNE WAGENAAR

Domaine des Diables is a young and dynamic wine company. It is run by the equally young and dynamic couple Guillaume and Virginie Philip. It is a small-scale and artisanal family business, which is now unique in Provence. The vast majority of wineries - and certainly those making that immensely popular Provençal rosé. have been taken over by big investors and craftsmanship has long since disappeared in most cases.

Guillaume and Virginie do everything themselves, from cultivating vineyards to making wine. And from the proceeds of their wines, they have to live.

Excluding

Domaine des Diables comprises just 16 hectares of its own vineyards, from which some 150 thousand bottles of wine come annually. In addition to their own vineyards, Guillaume and Virginie lease over 40 hectares.

Wine land is extremely expensive in Provence, so for an artisanal family business, leasing is the only option. In total, Domaine des Diables produces around 500 thousand bottles a year. And that's not much for a company making such sought-after wines! The wines are therefore quite exclusive and, for most cuvées, the rule is: gone is gone.

Perfectly balanced

The 2020 wines are aromatic with perfect balance. The vines did not have it easy, as an early flowering in March was unexpectedly followed by an all-destroying frost. Fortunately, the vines did not give up and blossomed again just under a week later. A humid spring was followed by a dry summer. So dry, in fact, that not a drop of rain fell between June and September. The upside was that the grapes were harvested in supreme health, without a trace of disease or mould.

The alcohol content is slightly lower than in other years, so the balance is perfect: the wines are concentrated and full-bodied, without it all becoming too much. Moreover, they are remarkably aromatic with tropical fruits like lychee and passion fruit and a slightly lighter colour than in previous years.

Awards cabinet

Despite the fact that no fairs and competitions could be held because of the corona pandemic, Domaine des Diables again generously won prizes. No fewer than 26 gold and 3 silver medals could be added to Guillaume and Virginie's trophy cabinet. This includes their coveted Prix National de la Dynamique Agricole, an official recognition in terms of creativity, expertise and ongoing commitment to sustainable wine production.
