Grands Crus of Burgundy
1 GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN
No less than 9 Grands Crus and 26 Premiers Crus are made in this village. World-famous, but it still looks peaceful as it used to around church and castle. The Burgundy region has a total of 33 superior vineyards with that highest classification Grand Cru. There are hundreds of Premiers Crus.
2 MARSANNAY-LA-CÔTE
This is where the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne begins, just next to Dijon. Travel tip for spring! With côte is not meant coast, but the relief, the slopes. Some more terms: climats plots are delineated according to their geological features and clos are the walled vineyards.
3 CLOS DE VOUGEOT
A mythical domain of the 12th-century Cistercian monks who classified the climats and clos. The castle with its large wine cellar and old presses is now headquarters of the Chevaliers du Tastevin, a brotherhood of 12,000 'knights': ambassadors of Burgundy around the world.
4 VOSNE-ROMANÉE
One of the most prized wine plots in the world. From this plot of just 1.8 hectares comes the most expensive and famous red wine in the world. Burgundy, by the way, is hugely fragmented. For example, Clos de Vougeot, a 50-hectare Grand Cru vineyard, has as many as 80 owners.
5 NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES
This small village is the namesake of the famous Côte de Nuits, the northern part of wine district Côte-d'Or. The southern part is called Côte de Beaune. Burgundy is divided into five wine districts: Chablis, Côte-d'Or, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais and Beaujolais.
