From Reims-based champagne house Louis Roederer, the new Collection 243 is now available. At the end of October, Stéphane Richer de Forges, export manager of Louis Roederer, came to the Netherlands especially to give us a tasting. The wine has the fresh style associated with the champagne house, with yellow fruit (plum) from the pinot noir, complemented by sweet citrus fruit (lemon meringue) and delicate notes of white flowers (jasmine) from the chardonnay. The addition of a good proportion of reserve wines aged in oak brings out toasted, smoky notes. Delicious as an aperitif, but also with fish and shellfish dishes. Collection is the more innovative version of the earlier Brut Premier: produced biodynamically and only from the best vineyards on the best limestone soils that are future-proofed when the climate changes, to continue the fresh style. The number represents the number of blends since its founding in 1776, thus indicating the most recent vintage each time - making the bottle even more unique.

Best sommelier 2022

Last year, young sommelier Adriaan Visser won the title Best Sommelier of the Netherlands, which he can carry for two years. Finally, because he had previously competed for the Trophée Henriot, named after champagne producer Henriot from Reims who co-organises the competition with the Guild of Sommeliers. Adriaan did already pass the second highest level of The Court of Master Sommeliers' tough training: Advanced Sommelier. Want to see this ambitious host at work? He is currently working at Harry's Maastricht in the hip Wyck on the Meuse neighbourhood. 'This luxury brasserie is as cosmopolitan as it is vibrant,' writes the Michelin guide.
