Why on earth would you spend €180 on a 1cl bottle of cognac? That's the question we got answered yesterday during the presentation of 'Louis XIII The Drop'

Just for imaging purposes, a 'drop' literally means a drop in English. A wine glass holds around 2,400, while a 1 cl bottle - say nail polish size - holds 180. Not much, you might think. But when it comes to Louis XIII, every drop is worth gold-literally and figuratively. Because you taste every drop of this rare, exclusive cognac that was made over 100 years ago.

Recently, WINELIFE was a guest at Rich&Rivano, Holland's number one shop to buy precious bottles of golden divinity. We got as many as 10 drops there Louis XIII cognac in the glass. Again, that doesn't seem like much, but it's enough to leave us completely enchanted by this centenary drink of the gods. Especially that very first drop: it is so intense in flavour and has such a warming effect that you keep feeling it for minutes.

Louis XIII is no ordinary cognac. It is a masterpiece. It is a blend of eaux-de-vie aged between 40 and more than 100 years in centuries-old French oak barrels, known as Limousin tierçons. The result? A deep golden liquid with a complex flavour palette of caramel, vanilla, honey, dried fruit, spices and a hint of tobacco. This is not a drink that you knock back, you taste this drop by drop.
Yet cognac still has a dusty image: something for older gentlemen with fat cigars and ditto bellies. A shame. That is why cognac house Rémy Martin came up with a new approach: The Drop. A stylish miniature bottle with one centilitre of Louis XIII, wrapped in an elegant leather case, complete with cord in the colour of the cap. Extra fun: you can have your initials engraved on it.

In short: are you looking for a unique and stylish gift, for someone else or for yourself? Then this centennial cognac in drop shape is literally and figuratively a golden find. Go to richrivano.com
