Women's movement out of date? In the traditionally male-dominated wine world, women can always use support, although many talents have now claimed their share. From Maud Kleuskens of the new wine label Made with Maude, we were sent some wines. They are from Portuguese winemaker Patricia Santos. Together, the women send their 'mission in a bottle' to give as many people as possible a taste of the female winemaker. Oenologist Patricia is a nature lover and prefers to work with local varieties. Her rosé of tinta roriz and touriga nacional smells fantastic of wild flowers with some more earthy notes. With powerful red fruit on the palate, it is definitely not too fresh for winter. Its white of fernão pires and síria is also a mouthful, as are the Portuguese grape names. The granite soil provides smoky notes. Made with Maude gives much of its profits to gender equality projects worldwide. Gift tip, because unwrapping the box is already a treat.

Glassblowing

If you travel to the Champagne region, pay some attention to the wine as well as the glassware. Located in a bend of the Aube, the municipality of Bayel is traditionally famous for it. Pure crystal has been produced here since 1300, but when glassblower Jean-Baptiste Mazzolay from Venice brought back the secret of Italian glass from Murano in 1666, it was off the hook. Louis XIV commissioned him for a royal factory to supply glass to Versailles - and that, of course, meant lots of champagne glasses. You can score bargains here on the eve of the end-of-year celebrations every year, and the museum hosts the exhibition La Manufacture des Cristalleries Royales de Champagne de Bayel to see.
