Century-old drink

Century-old drink

Other word for mead? Mede. We were suddenly reminded of that puzzle word from our grandmother again when we were sent tins of Bemuse.

Mede is over 8,000 years old and is made by fermenting honey with water and enriching it with fruit and herbs. Of the new trendy version, we were allowed to taste four flavours. Made by friends Anna Chalov and Nataliya Peretrutova, ''female entrepreneurs to watch', according to English newspapers. What an exciting alternative to sparkling wine this is! It bubbles nicely and is dry and refreshing, but with complex flavours that mean you don't pour it down your throat all at once but can also serve it with a meal. The Wild Raspberry Mead is our favourite: full of red fruits like raspberry and blackcurrant. Serve with a salad of green beans, orange and olives with red wine vinegar dressing or grilled sea bass with lime, ginger and fennel.
