The theme of our WINELIFE tasting this time was red wine from Portugal. Some 73 wines were delivered. Bram van der Pligt, hospitality, trade, education, but above all wine man, and Magda van der Rijst fell in love with the quirky and friendly character of Portuguese reds. It is often said of Italy that its wines are so unique because they are made from grape varieties that are really only found in Italy. This is true, but the same goes for
Portuguese wines. Alfrocheiro, baga, camarate, castelão, jaen, sousão, trincadeira and then all the touriga are not common varieties for us, but in Portugal they certainly are.

Own grapes first

Excellent wines from international varieties like cabernet sauvignon and syrah are also made in Portugal, but this tasting was all about the indigenous ones. We were looking for wines with a face of their own that you enjoy drinking, at least in winter. These wines are well-filled, supple with a bit of bite and warming, partly because the bulk easily top an alcohol content of 14%. Not that it bothers you, as that alcohol is lovingly absorbed by the ripe fruit.

Approach & criteria

We asked wine sellers to submit their nicest, tastiest, most captivating red wines from Portugal. The response was enthusiastic. Over 70 wines came in and there was a wine from almost every region.
