At Magda About, the name of this column, I almost always write about a region, city or winery I have visited. In Red Mountain, I have never been. Red Mountain is a relatively small AVA (American Viticultural Area), the US version of the protected designation of origin officially called AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) in Europe. Red Mountain is in Washington State and I haven't gotten any further than Portland in Oregon, just across the Washington border. I was in Portland over 20 years ago, but the relaxed atmosphere in this part of the US, with countless coffee roasters and urban breweries, I can call immediately. Never before have I seen so many announcements of local food & beer pairing dinners. Even then. I was there mostly for the wine and left Portland to descend to California via Oregon. Red Mountain came my way later. That went like this.
