California is a true wine state, with San Francisco at its centre. But everything here is much less ancient than in classic wine countries. The immigrants in the 18th century took winemaking with them. Perhaps that is why there is such an eye for innovation? Silicon Valley's technology companies also stimulate the creative and innovative spirit of the young generation of winemakers.
