A meeting of history and eco-chic

From Cape Town, we take the N1, leaving turnoffs to the well-known wine regions like Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Wellington and Paarl to the left and right. As we approach the Du Toitskloof pass, we choose not to take the tunnel. But via the R101 to negotiate the breathtaking mountains that point to the blue sky like silent sentinels. On the other side of the pass, the breathtaking Broad River Valley stretches out in all its lush splendour. Green vineyards set against a backdrop of flowing streams and sparkling waterfalls gurgling from jagged rock formations. As the sun climbs higher in the clear blue sky, the ghostly patches of early morning fog that gently caressed the valley floor slowly disappear.

Via the R43, we drive silently through a rustic landscape of farms, grazing cattle, more vineyards, ruggedly beautiful stretches of renosterveld, fynbos. And lush green citrus orchards, herds of free-roaming springbok, zebra and the occasional ostrich.
