'Onion chips with the Chenin, why not?'

'Onion chips with the Chenin, why not?'

Sebastiaan and Linsey Emmelkamp are Wine Fluencer together, with tens of thousands of followers on Instagram. They post about wine and food with a wink and speed that WINELIFE can never achieve. In the daily life, Seb works in aviation and Lin is a master of law. Besides content creation, they also have to keep the baby and two almost-pubes at home safe from all the open bottles and hot pans.

Sounds like a busy life, what about your time management?

'Fair? Not. Seb doesn't know what an agenda is at all and anything Lin puts in it won't be read anyway. So yes, chaos all round. But we enjoy doing it. It is social media and work at the same time. Recordings are often one and the same day at home. Besides home tasting, we focus on restaurants and other fun outings.'

How did you come up with the idea five years ago?

'Corona, flight ban, then 'travel on' in the Netherlands. Once on the terrace of a nice wine bar, Seb tasted his then most favourite wine. The joke was 'well honey, you write, I'll taste'. Less than thirty minutes later @wine.fluencer created on Instagram.'

Looking, smelling, judging: where did you learn that?

'That started for both of us a long time ago. Seb at the Hotel School and Lin at the training for independent working hostess. We also got to attend many master classes, taste many, many, many things and this year the real wine course will finally start!'

What do you want to tell the followers?

'We think it is important to enthuse people about wine. Dare to let yourself be advised and try to discover what you like. Just for once, don't walk out of the supermarket with a crate of beer, but go to the wine shop around the corner. Wine doesn't have to be fifty euros to be 'tasty'. It doesn't have to be complicated either. But: taste!

What are the reactions like?

'We are bound to kick the real connoisseurs in the shins. Sommeliers maybe. But wine is special and should be accessible to everyone. Even with little or no knowledge, and for every budget. The reactions are very positive and we really enjoy hearing, for instance, that someone was able to score a very nice wine at the supermarket for less than five euros. Of course, we also sometimes hear that we should 'not be so interesting about a slobber wine'. But hey, then you're just not in the right place with us.'

Chenin Blanc with sour cream & onion chips, nice experiment?

'It's fascinating to see what wine can do with food, and food with wine. You really have no idea until you try it! We love chips, Lin especially, and wine, so yeah, why not see how the combination goes? That way we can be our weird selves and make the videos people are used to from us - chaotic, busy and pretty absurd at times, haha. Maybe focus the next series on wine and pizza? Who knows!'
