Jetzt geht's los

In issue 90 of WINELIFE, you'll read a lot about German white wines, but reds are made there too. By Jasper Bruysten, preferably. He was first with Weingut Altenkirch, which he revived and where he raised the quality of the wines. Now he has gone into business for himself in the Rheingau, at Lorcher Steillagen. Under the name Jasper Franz, he makes wines with his signature: very fresh, mineral, complex and always reflecting the terroir. Riesling is still dominant at 78 per cent, but you also see more and more Spätburgunder (12.5 per cent) in the Rheingau, which Jasper also loves. And as the years get warmer and drier, he is experimenting with grapes like sauvignon blanc and cabernet franc. Here we tip his oak-aged Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from vineyards with a special microclimate on the steep slopes of slate in the Rheingau. You taste aromas of cherry, forest fruit, toast, spice and something earthy. Mmm!
