Abrie Beeslaar not only knows how to get grapes from the slopes of the Simonsberg into the bottle, but also magic. He is the winemaker at Kanonkop Wine Estate in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.

No less than three times Abrie was named International Winemaker of the Year and in 2018 he became the first South African winemaker to see one of his wines, the Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2015, receive a perfect score of 100 points from British Master of Wine Tim Atkin. That the quality is consistently high is also proven by all the trophies, gold medals and certificates of merit that Kanonkop has won. A good cellar wine to invest in! With some regularity, various lots go under the hammer at South African auction house Strauss & Co, and we are talking about auction lots of one or more bottles - often six.
To be precise, following the establishment of the auction house as of June 2019, 276 have already been auctioned. lots Cannonhead offered of which 88 per cent were sold for a total of €230,500. Cape Winemakers Guild's annual auction will offer rare bottles of Kanonkop, but it is not scheduled again until October 2024.
