Jane Hunter is leading lady of family-owned Hunter's, which has made Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc famous. It was founded in 1979 by Irish immigrant Ernie Hunter, but after his sudden early death, his wife Jane, who was a highly skilled winemaker herself, took over. Her cabinet is full of awards: not just for the wines, but for Jane herself!

Your history is also that of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. What makes this wine so special?
'Our Marlborough region has a unique combination of cool climate and fertile soils. As a result, it has earned its special place in the wine world. The terroir creates the ideal environment for producing iconic Sauvignon Blanc, with vibrant flavours and intense aromas unmatched anywhere else.'

You also produce Riesling, Grüner Veltliner and Gewurtztraminer. Do white grapes do better in New Zealand or are these personal favourites?
'White grape varieties thrive particularly well. Our cool climate and soils produce wines of exceptional quality and character. As for personal favourites, each variety has its own unique charm and appeal, but I must admit I have a soft spot for our Sauvignon Blanc, which really shines in the terroir of Marlborough.'
3A. Which of your wines should WINELIFE readers be drinking this summer?
'I would especially recommend our Sauvignon Blanc. Its crisp acidity, refreshing citrus flavours and lively aromas make the wine perfect for sipping in warm weather. Whether you drink it solo or pair it with a variety of dishes. Also special is our Grüner Veltliner, with in the nose flavours of white peach, citrus and floral characters and a slight spicy undertone. The wine combines a satiny structure with nice acidity. A nice alternative to the typical Austrian Grüner Veltliners.'
