World Verdejo Day, the reason to open a bottle of Verdejo on 10 June!

Wine lovers take note: Are you looking for a good reason to crack open a bottle of wine? Friday 10 June is World Verdejo Day. The day when we celebrate the summer character of the verdejo grape with fans around the world and enjoy an extra delicious glass of wine.

A day especially for Verdejo?

Yes indeed, World Verdejo Day it is! Winemakers from Spain's Rueda wine region owe this special holiday to their own hard work. In the 1970s, wine producer Marqués de Riscal saw potential in Rueda. Indeed, the soil and climate lend themselves to fresh whites. Thanks to this producer's investments, the area and the wine flourish, and many (new) winemakers follow.

In 1980, Rueda received D.O. status: Denominación de Origen. This is the Spanish official designation for a quality wine region. The region has numerous vineyards and there are more than 70 wine producers in Rueda making Verdejo wines, making Rueda the leading producer of Verdejo. Something to be proud of!

Versatile Verdejo

Rueda Verdejo is known for its characteristic spicy and powerful aroma, with a hint of green pepper, and an intense dry taste. But its freshness and a surprisingly firm bite also make it more than worthwhile. The wine is known as the terrace wine, but it really tastes at least as good in spring, autumn and winter!

On 10 June, we pay tribute not only to the grape itself, but also to the more than 70 Rueda wine producers who ensure that we can get top-quality Rueda Verdejo everywhere in the Netherlands.

This, of course, needs to be celebrated. So make sure you have a bottle of Verdejo cold on 10 June! Olé!
