Wine in Moderation, drink less but better!

Wine in Moderation, drink less but better!

Although wine remains popular worldwide, by 2024 total consumption has fallen to its lowest level since 1961. Yet there are countries where wine is still flowing richly. The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) recently published the latest figures.

The United States continues to lead in absolute numbers with 33.3 million hectolitres of wine consumption, despite a decline of 5.8% from 2023. France (23 million hl) and Italy (22.3 million hl) follow at a distance. Notable is the sharp drop of 19.3% in China, which now ranks 10th. That drop contributes heavily to the decline globally.

Looking at per capita consumption, Portugal tops the list with 61.1 litres of wine per person. Italy (42.7L and France (41.5L) follow at an appropriate distance. The Netherlands is not in the top 10, but with 3.2 million hl (14th place globally) and an average of around 26 litres per person, we are in the middle of the pack, but our consumption also declined.

OIV attributes the global decline of 3.3% in wine consumption to economic uncertainty, rising prices and a growing preference for moderation and non-alcoholic alternatives. Nevertheless, wine remains an important part of the culture in many countries. For wine lovers, this is the time to deepen their knowledge and enjoy each glass more consciously.
