SWIGG: Old wine in new bottles

Is there anything new to come up with in terms of wine tastings? The answer is: always. - TEXT MARJOLEIN SCHUMAN

Through the letterbox fell a package from SWIGG. It takes some getting used to the black colour and the strange, flat shape of the wine bottles, but the gloom disappears immediately with the enthusiastic voice of Brabander Gijs Vermeegen: 'Swig is the English word for gulp, put a soft g after it and you're done!'

Previously employed by Slovenian wine family company Puklavec & Friends, Gijs now guides us through the tasting with smoothly edited videos. Together with Kel van Iersel and from the pre-war cellars of Wijnhandel van Iersel in Waspik, Brabant, each of the six wines is assessed and grape and region of origin are explained in more detail. En passant, you learn all sorts of things about wine, from acids to tannins, and can use the aroma wheel provided. Sympathetic is also the idea of the (recyclable) bag, a modern design based on old wine bags.
