It was in 2003 that Silvio Bragagnolo, winemaker in the Piedmont (northern Italy), made his first passito: intensely concentrated, sweet wine made from dried grapes. For 20 years, he has thrown himself fully into these passito wines. This year, his passito of gewürztraminer won not only the Grand Gold medal, but also the title International Revelation Sweet Wine at the renowned Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. The judges agreed that in terms of sweet wine, this was the 'revelation of the year 2023' for them.
A proud Silvio: 'I have specialised in passito wines with my company. Over the past 15 years, gold medals have already gone to my Moscato and Brachetto, so now the Gewürztraminer has won mega awards! These are things that make me feel I'm doing good. I want to make these style wines, my great passion, more known to the public. I have already achieved another dream: to be the first producer in the world to make a passito from four aromatic grape varieties: besides Moscato, Brachetto and Gewürztraminer, I am also producing a Malvasia.' Hopefully, this winter, for a while, it will be sweet rest for Silvio.
