London: the new wine capital of the world?

London was recently crowned the 'wine capital of the world'. The title of wine capital is mainly based on the number of restaurants serving wines ('fines wines') from the world's top 250 wine and champagne houses. With an impressive 519 such restaurants, London surpasses both Paris and New York.

London's status as the capital of the wine world has been boosted in part by the influx of affluent residents and the rise of five-star hotels in the capital. This has led to extensive wine lists with expensive wines. Also contributing to the city's thriving wine culture are the huge number of wine tastings, the large number of wine lovers and wine courses, and the diversity and quality of London's wine bars. Auction houses Sotheby's and Christie's regularly host events where rare and precious wines go under the hammer. In addition, the city hosts leading wine fairs, such as the London Wine Fair.

The combination of a dynamic market and a deeply rooted wine culture makes London a true leader in the global wine industry today. Time for a visit soon...?
