Police have seized 150,000 litres of bulk counterfeit wine in Lecce, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The red wine would be bottled and sold as ‘Primitivo Salento IGP’ and ‘Primitivo Puglia IGP’. Authorities were puzzled as to whether the wine complied with the production rules for these protected geographical indications.

The find is the result of the wine quality inspection agency in collaboration with the special agriculture unit of the carabinieri, The equivalent of Dutch Royal Military Police.

They estimated the value of the bulk wine seized at €1.5 million.
